University of Bern
The dental program at the University of Bern combines a foundation in the natural sciences with hands-on clinical training. Over the course of five years, students acquire the knowledge and practical skills needed to treat patients independently. The program is divided into a three-year bachelor’s program and a two-year master’s program and is specifically designed to prepare students for a career as a dentist.

Bachelor's degree program
A practical clinical introduction
During the first three years of the program, the focus is primarily on the scientific and medical foundations of dentistry. Students acquire in-depth knowledge in subjects such as anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, thereby laying the groundwork for their future clinical work.
At the same time, they gain early insights into everyday clinical practice. During their first years of study, students can assist with treatments and thus gain their first practical experience.
In the third year of study, the focus shifts more toward practical training. Dental skills are practiced intensively on models and so-called phantom heads.
These simulations allow students to practice basic treatment techniques under realistic conditions before they begin working with patients during their master’s program.
Master's program
Clinical training with patients
The master's program has a strong clinical focus. In the University of Bern's dental clinics, students treat their own patients for the first time under the supervision of experienced dentists.
In the process, they gain practical experience in various fields of dentistry, including prosthodontics, orthodontics, conservative dentistry, and oral surgery. At the same time, they further develop their diagnostic skills, treatment planning abilities, and clinical decision-making processes.
In addition to clinical training, the academic study of dentistry also plays a role, for example through research projects or a master’s thesis.
The program concludes with a master’s thesis and a state examination. Upon passing these, graduates are qualified to practice as dentists.
