University of Zurich
The dental program at the University of Zurich lasts five years and combines a foundation in the natural sciences with intensive clinical training. After passing the Numerus Clausus, the program begins with a preclinical phase, followed by clinical training at the University of Zurich’s Center for Dentistry. The goal of the program is to provide students with both a solid scientific foundation and the practical skills required to practice as a dentist.

Bachelor's degree program
A practical clinical introduction
The bachelor’s program lasts three years and provides the scientific foundation for subsequent clinical training. During the first two years of study, many courses are taken alongside medical students. This enables future dentists to gain a broad understanding of medicine as well as a solid foundation in scientific disciplines such as anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology.
In addition to these theoretical foundations, students also acquire basic medical and communication skills. Lectures, practical training, and courses are closely integrated and often focus on functional aspects of the human body.
The goal of this phase is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the biological and medical concepts that will be important for dental treatment later on.
In the third year of study, the focus shifts more strongly to dentistry itself. Students learn the basic technical skills required for their future clinical practice. This includes initial practical exercises as well as an introduction to diagnostic and therapeutic concepts in dentistry. Upon successful completion of this phase of study, students are awarded the title Bachelor of Dental Medicine and can transfer into the master's program without having to take an additional entrance exam.
Master's program
Clinical training with patients
The two-year master’s program has a strong clinical focus and is primarily held at the University of Zurich’s Center for Dentistry. During this phase, students deepen their professional knowledge while gaining extensive practical experience in treating patients.
The program covers various areas of modern dentistry and combines theoretical coursework with clinical practice. Students learn to make diagnoses, plan treatments, and perform therapeutic procedures independently.
The training incorporates the latest scientific methods and interdisciplinary findings, thereby fostering a modern and evidence-based clinical approach.
Upon successful completion of the master's program, graduates are awarded the title Master of Dental Medicine. This degree qualifies the holder to register for the federal final examination and serves as the foundation for a future career as a dentist.
