The CUMD

The Clinique Universitaire de Médecine Dentaire (CUMD) is one of the three sections – along with Clinical Medicine and Fundamental Medicine – of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Geneva (UNIGE). Its mission stems directly from the University’s three main goals: teaching, research and service to the community.

More specifically, the CUMD’s mission is to provide students, researchers and patients with the highest quality teaching, the best structure for research and innovation, the best dental care at the best prices, while promoting excellence in communication with the community.

As the only French-speaking dental training center in Switzerland, CUMD provides basic academic and clinical training for dental students, as well as advanced and continuing training for dentists. It conducts fundamental, translational and clinical research in the vast field of oral health. Finally, it provides the Geneva population with preventive and therapeutic clinical care.

Basic training

Every year, CUMD trains dentists the theoretical and practical skills, which are essential to the practice of dentistry. The basic training, which ensures autonomous access to other more specific scientific and practical knowledge, should facilitate adaptation to future developments in the profession and encourage further training at post-graduate or doctoral level in a specialized field.

Pre-graduate training consists of a theoretical and a practical component. The theoretical part, and to some extent the practical part too, is based on the optimum application of problem-based learning.

1st - 3rd years Bachelor of Dentistry (180 ECTS credits)

The first two years of the Bachelor of Dentistry program are taught together with those of the Human Medicine and Biomedical Sciences programs.

The second year is organized into multidisciplinary units focusing on basic medical sciences and the development of the oral sphere, taught on the principle of Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Practical exercises are also organized as part of pre-clinical teaching.

The third year of the Bachelor’s degree in dentistry continues with problem-based learning, providing the technical skills required for future clinical practice.

1st and 2nd year Master of Dental Medicine (120 ECTS credits)

The Master’s program offers intensive learning in a clinical environment (AMC), providing care for CUMD patients. It also integrates various theoretical courses designed to:

  • Carry out a clinical activity based on scientific data
  • Develop prevention and long-term follow-up of patients
  • Acquire social, ethical and communication skills
  • Provide a basis for scientific activity and research.

The students’ secretariat and the Academic Advisor answer specific questions about dental training. For administrative and practical questions, please consult the Faculty of Medicine’s practical information pages.
