Studying dentistry at the University of Bern

The dentistry programme at the University of Bern offers a first-class, practice-oriented education with a strong scientific foundation. The programme is divided into two sections that provide students with all the necessary basics as well as extensive clinical experience.

Bachelor's programme (3 years)

In the first three years, especially in the first two years, the focus is on the scientific and medical foundations of dentistry. Students learn important subjects such as anatomy, physiology and biochemistry and gain their first practical experience using models and simulations. In the first two years of the programme, students gain a valuable insight into their future studies and practical work by being allowed to assist older students during treatments. This early practical orientation helps the new students to gain initial experience in the clinical environment and enables them to learn from their more advanced fellow students. In the 3rd year, students gain their first practical dental experience, which they initially practise on models and phantom heads. They only work directly with patients in the subsequent Master’s programme.
